human papillomavirus in squamous cell carcinoma of esophagus in a high-risk population

چکیده
introduction and aims: the role of human papillomavirus (hpv) in the etiology of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (escc) is not clear. previous studies have found highly variable (from 0% to 67%) prevalence of hpv in escc tumor. however, prevalence of hpv in escc tumor seems to be higher in areas with high incidence of escc , such as china and south africa. iran is one of the areas of the world with the highest rates of escc. however, no previous study has reported the prevalence of hpv in escc tumor tissues from iran. materials and methods: in this study, we compared the prevalence of a common marker for the presence of hpv (my09/my11 consensus primers) and two markers for the presence of hpv-16 and hpv-18 (respective e6 /e7 primers) in tumor tissues from 38 escc cases and normal biopsied tissues from 38 iranian individuals. results: 14 out of the 38 escc (36.8%) samples, but only 5 out of 38 control samples (13.2%) were positive for the common marker of hpv presence; this difference was statistically significant (p=0.02). five escc samples (13.2%) but none of the control samples were positive for hpv16 e6 /e7 gene (p=0.05). three of the escc samples (7.9%) and five of the control samples (13.2%) were positive for hpv18 e6 /e7 gene. conclusions: our data are consistent with hpv dna studies conducted in other high-risk areas for escc. hpv should be considered as a potential factor responsible for the increased incidence of escc in iran and other high-incidence areas of the world.

Association of Some High-Risk Mucosal Types of Human Papillomavirus with Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma in an Iranian Population
Background & Objective: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the second most common non-melanoma skin cancer that may be caused by Human papillomavirus (HPV), especially in immunosuppressed patients. However, the role of the mucosal types of HPV in SCC patients with normal immunity has not been extensively confirmed. The aim of this study was to investigate the association...

AIM To investigate the relation of human papillomavirus (HPV) and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Iranian patients as compared to normal controls. METHODS Using MY09/MY11 consensus primers, we compared the prevalence of a HPV L1 gene in tumor tissues from 38 ESCC cases and biopsied tissues from 38 endoscopically normal Iranian individuals. We also compared the presence of HPV16 a...
متن کاملDetection of Human Papillomavirus in Osophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma samples in Mazandaran Province, Iran
We examined 170 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma patients. All subjects live in Mazandaran province, a region with high incidence rate of esophageal cancer and have become known as the “Asian Esophageal Cancer Belt”. Samples were tested for HPV-DNA by MY09/11 and Gp5+/6+ general primers using nested PCR. Of the 170 ESCC samples, 86 (50.6%) were ma...
متن کاملHigh-risk human papillomavirus in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma--letter.
BACKGROUND Although most cases of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) in western populations have been attributed to high levels of exposure to tobacco and alcohol, infectious agents have been postulated as possible causes, particularly human papillomavirus (HPV). METHODS To explore this issue, we analyzed HPV DNA prevalence and HPV types together with lifestyle factors, in relation to ...
متن کاملRole of the Human Papillomavirus Infectio in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Background and Objective: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the possible etiologic factors in development of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). In this study we aimed to study the role of HPV in ESCC. Patients and Methods:In this study, 140 cases of ESCC were analyzed for the HPV DNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using GP5+/GP6+ primers for L1 open reading frame (ORF) to am...
